Hopewell Umphrey Carter

John Carter		 Hopewell Umphrey Carter, son of Elizabeth Carty , was born in Maryland on 28 January, 1857. It is believed that he was the son of Dr. Alexander Hardcastle, a Caroline County neighbor of the Carty family.

On 25 December, 1888 he married Sarah Catherine RIDGEWAY.

Hopewell and Sarah had the following children:

  • John W. Carter married Nora (last name unknown)
  • Alice Carter
  • Agnes Carter married Aubrey Newlin
  • Catherine Carter
  • Laura Carter
  • Hopewell Carter married Lethia Coker

Hopewell Sr. died on 13 February, 1933. He is buried with his wife Sarah, who died in 1938, at Immanuel Union (Manship) Church in Cheswold, DE.
