Based on the Maryland census records, James Carty was born sometime between 1765-1774. I have no information on his origins so I do not know if he was born here or was an immigrant.

Based on Dorchester Co., MD marriage records we know that he married Barsheba Dean in Dorchester Co. on 17 August 1792.

By the 1800 census. however, the family was living in Caroline Co., MD.
1800 Caroline Co. MD census records list:

• James Carty (age 26-45) - race "white"
• wife (26-45)
• 5 children
• 1 slave

By 1810, the family was still in in Caroline Co. James and his wife are still aged 26-45 but there are now 6 children.

We know the names of only two of the children, so far.

• James Carty Jr who is found living in his own household in Caroline Co. in 1820.
  He is listed as "white" with a wife (age 16-26) and no children. By 1830 James (age 30-40) and his wife (age 20-30) are shown with 4 children.

  There are two marriage records that may apply to James. Jr. on 23 May 1820 a James Carty married Harriett Dyett and on 25 October 1823 a James Carty married Hannah Wootens.

• William Carty who was the progenitor of the mixed race Carty/Carter family that later appeared in Delaware.

Sometime before 1814 Barsheba Dean Carty died and on 18 June, 1814 James married Sally Walker.

James Carty Sr. died in March 1823 { See Probate Records }. His widow, Sally Carty continued to live in Caroline Co. through 1850 per the census records.
