John D. Cott was born in Kent County Delaware sometime around 1804 according to the Delaware census records. He is believed to have been the son of John A. Cott and his wife, Mary.

By 1839 he was married Sarah Ann Dean, the daughter of Jesse Dean Sr. and his wife, Rebecca. Sarah was born in Kent County DE. sometime around 1813.

John and Sarah Cott are mentioned in the will of Sarah's father. Jesse Dean Sr. left Sarah's inheritance in trust for his daughter with Elisha DURHAM as trustee in order to protect it from the debts of her husband.

John D. Cott died in Kent County , DE on October 16, 1876. His wife, Sarah, died before him on June 5, 1867.
