Durham
The Durham Family first appears in Kent County DE on 27 October, 1739 when a Daniel Durham requested 150 acres adjoining John Hammits plantation in Mispillion Hundred, Kent Co. The deed was signed by Tho. Penn and can be found in Warrant Book A, pg. 64. This Daniel was probably born sometime before 1724 but we do not know where.

On 17 May, 1744 a Daniel Durham purchased 100 acres in the "Forest of Little Creek" in Kent Co. from Isaac Pounds for 76 pounds. (N-1-46). This was part of 200 acres known as Littleworth granted by warrant in Philadelphia on 9 November, 1734 to Thomas Alstone. In seven places in this document, Daniel is referred to as "JUNer" implying there was another, older, Daniel Durham also living in Kent Co. at the time.

It is not known if the 1739 purchase belonged to JUNer or to the elder Daniel. It is also not known if the two were father and son although that seems most likely.

The relationship between these 2 early Daniel Durhams and the next generation of Durhams who were clearly linked to the mixed blood community is also not known but it seems likely they were the direct ancestors.

The mixed blood Durham family of Kent County DE spring from two men: John Durham and Daniel Durham . The two were clearly related but their exact relationship has not yet been proven. It is possible they were brothers but I think they may have been father and son. Based on their wills, John appears to have been the elder, leaving numerous married children and some grandchildren at the time of his death in 1788. Daniel died in 1786 leaving several minor children which suggests he was a relatively young man at the time of his death.

Without proof it remains speculation, but I believe Daniel Durham Senior was the father of Daniel Durham Junior and John Durham and that John Durham was the father of Daniel III. But for now I will keep the two lines separate.
