| Isaiah Zaddock Munce
Isaiah "Zaddock/Zeddick" Munce was born in Kent Co., DE. The date of his birth is not clear. According to the 1860 census be was born c.1837, the 1870 census places his birth c.1840, the 1880 census places his birth c.1831 and his grave marker puts his birthdate c.1834.
Originally it was believed he was the son of Robert Munce, Jr. and Jemima Hansor but he was not with the family in 1850 census. The 1840 census lists 2 sons for Robert & Jemima which should include Josiah (b.1835) and James H. (b.1837.)
Based on Joel Durham's and Elmira Muntz's Civil War Pension affidavits (of 11 Sep 1906) stating that Zeddick was Joel's "step son," and based on Lydia A. Munce Salmons/Sammons' affidavit (of 11 Sep 1906) stating that Zeddick was "my first cousin and my mother raised him," it would seem that Zeddick is not actually the son of Robert Munce Jr and Jemina Handsor as had previously been believed. Instead, it would seem that he was actually an illegitimate child (b. Mar 1835) of Robert's sister Margaret Munce/Muntz prior to her marriage (ca. 1838) to Joel Durham.
On 29 June, 1857 Isaiah married Elmira Carty in the home of Joel Durham. The minister was Piner Mansfield.
On 18 May, 1864 Isaiah was drafted into the Union Army at Wilmington and served as a private in the U.S.C. Vol. Inft., Company E, Regiment 30 commanded by George Woodward. He fought at Raleigh N.C. in the spring of 1865 and was mustered out at Roanoke, N.C. on 10 December, 1865.
The army records describe him as being 5'3" tall, eyes and hair black and a farm laborer.
Although it was "said" his name was Isaiah (after an uncle) he was always called "ZED" and most records list him as "ZEDDICK or ZADDOCK". The Civil War pension files are filled with attempts to explain the difference.
Isaiah and Elmira had the following children:
Isaiah died on 2 June, 1905 of congestion of the lungs. He was buried at Immanuel Union (Manship) Church cemetary in Cheswold, DE. His wife, Elmira, died in 1922 and was buried at the Forest Grove 7th Day Adventist church nearby.
