The Sockum Family

I haven't had time to organize my notes about the Sockum Family. My connection with the family goes way back to Warren Wright whose wife, Maria, was believed to have been a Sockum. Maria was born in Sussex County DE sometime around 1808. It is possible she was the sister of Levin Sockum who became well known in Sussex County DE as the result of a trial in which he was accused of selling gun powder to a negro. For an account of the story, see Moors

Sarah Sockum
daughter of Levin Sockum and wife of Isaac Harmon

In 1757 John Scokem and his wife Rachel appear in the taxables for Nanticoke Hundred. These might possibly be the parents of James Socom who appears in the 1800 Delaware Census which shows a James Socom , free colored in a household of 4, in Dagsboro Hundred. James is possiby the father of Levin and/or Maria.

The 1820 Delaware Census lists :
James Soccaum still in Dagsboro Hd. "free colored" age (over 45) with a wife (26-45), 2 daughters (under 14....Maria???) and 1 son (14-26...Levin???)

By the 1830 Delaware Census Levin Soccum appears in Indian River Hundred and William Sockum appears in Broad Creek Hundred.

After the trial, Levin Sockum and his wife Eunice RIDGEWAY moved with their family to Gloucester, New Jersey.

A lot more work needs to be done on this family.
